The Swedish record of 6.99 meters in long jump has been intact for 22 years.
But this year, Kajsa Bergqvist thinks it will smoke.
– It will happen, says the icon.
Kajsa Bergqvist is one of Sweden’s foremost athletes of all time. She is the only Swedish high jumper on the women’s side to win an Olympic medal, when she took bronze in Sydney in 2000.
Believe in World Cup gold
Her career ended in 2008 – and she has since been active in several different projects. Today she is the national captain of Sweden’s national athletics team – and she believes that it will be a successful year.
Especially for Armand Duplantis and Daniel Ståhl, who the newly appointed national team captain thinks are big favorites to win gold during this summer’s World Cup.
– We have a super strong gold favorite in “Mondo”. Daniel is challenged now for the first time and it will be a slightly new situation for him, but he has shown that he performs well at the big championships and he has routine and so on, so I think he has every opportunity to succeed, she says to SVT Sport.
“Will happen”
For just a couple of days, the long jumper Khaddi Sagnia hit the personal best at 6.95 meters. A paltry four centimeters from the Swedish record of 6.99 meters, which Erica Johansson is noted for 22 years ago. Bergqvist, on the other hand, believes that that record will be broken by Sagnia this season.
– Khaddi has been over seven meters many times in jumps where the plank hit may not have been true, so she has had that capacity for several years, says the icon and continues:
– Now, with this start of the season, it is clear that Khaddi longs to beat it (Swedish record), we all long for it. It will happen this season.
