Mikael Ymer left a shock message this weekend.
Now the tennis oracle Björn Hellberg breaks the silence.
– It was very surprising, he says.
Mikael Ymer has had a turbulent year, and last Friday came the shock news that no one had expected. The 24-year-old was suspended earlier in the year for 18 months after failing to report his stay, which is a violation of anti-doping rules.
Hellberg’s first words
Mikael Ymer has maintained that he did nothing wrong, and also cited the fact that an independent jury actually acquitted him before the International Tennis Federation chose to suspend him. And on Friday, Ymer chose to end his professional career.
“Hey all. I have decided to retire from professional tennis. Thanks for all the great memories. What a journey it has been. I wish all my former colleagues the best in their competitions,” wrote Mikael Ymer on Twitter/X.
The announcement shocked the whole of tennis Sweden, but according to one of the most knowledgeable, there is still hope for continued play in the future. Björn Hellberg, perhaps Swedish tennis’ greatest oracle, now sticks his chin out and hints at a possible comeback for Ymer.
– It is possible that he will regret it on closer reflection. He has time on his hands, and this is nothing definitive, as far as I understand. Of course, there may be doors open as well, he tells P4 Skaraborg.

The prompt
However, the decision from Ymer was nothing that Hellberg saw coming.
– They were very surprised, this thing with Ymer. It came as a shock to me that he is withdrawing.
As an example of successful comebacks, Hellberg highlights the fact that the Danish superstar Caroline Wozniacki made a comeback during the summer after a three-year hiatus.
– It is possible to come back after a longer break from tennis. I almost think that Mikael should take his decision under review, and aim to make a comeback, he says.
