Iceland’s Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir, who is visiting Helsinki, says there is support for applying for membership.

Finland’s possible application for NATO membership was also raised at a press conference. First, NATO’s foreign minister said his country favored an open door policy.
– Secondly, if Finland decides to apply for membership, Iceland will support it, said Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir.
Foreign minister Pekka Haavisto (Greens) considers it important for the EU to show support for Ukraine in its discussions with Russia.
According to Haavisto, Finland has maintained close contacts with Turkey and some other countries promoting the negotiations, such as Israel and France.
Diplomatic relations between Finland and Iceland 75 years
The visit of Foreign Minister Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir will continue until tomorrow. He will also meet with the President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö the Speaker of the Parliament Matti Vanhanen.
Iceland and Finland are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year with diplomatic relations. At the joint press conference, the foreign ministers stated that relations between the two countries have been good in the past.
Iceland is interested in, among other things, the expertise of the Finnish school and education sector. The Icelandic Foreign Minister said that a visit to Finland was planned.
