The iceberg named ‘A23a’, which broke away from the Antarctic coastline in 1986 and ran aground in the Weddell Sea and turned into an “ice island”, moved for the first time in more than 30 years last year. It was learned that the iceberg named “A23a” was caught in a giant whirlpool.
THE ICEBERG HAS BEEN SPINNING COUNTERCLOCKWISE FOR MONTHS
Experts say that an iceberg that would normally be carried away by the ocean’s strong currents has been spinning counterclockwise for months at a point north of Antarctica.
MAY NOT BE ABLE TO LEAVE THE VORDY FOR YEARS
Experts say that A23a may not be able to escape from this vortex for years, and that as long as the iceberg is rotating, its melting will be delayed.
Prof. Dr. Mark Brandon from the Open University in England told the BBC that, contrary to popular belief, the A23a iceberg “will not immediately break up and melt away.”
”THE ICEBERG THAT REFUSES TO DIE”
Expert Brandon described the iceberg, which has a surface area of approximately 4,000 square kilometers and a thickness of approximately 400 meters, as “A23a, an iceberg that refuses to die.”
