Canada started at a high pace against a puck-watching Sweden and 1-0 came after just over two minutes through Renata Fast.

  • Maria Rooth: This did Sweden well and less well in the WC premiere

  • An already steep uphill was made even steeper when Laura Stacey extended the lead three minutes later.

    – It goes fast. Incredibly difficult start, noted SVT’s expert Maria Rooth.

A way into the match then came when the great talent Hilda Svensson reduced with a well-aimed shot.

    – What an end to this young star. Brilliant of her, commented SVT’s Chris Härenstam.

Sweden had a goal disallowed: “Embarrassing”

Sweden then had two golden opportunities to equalize early in the second period. First Lina Ljungblom got a free position and then Sofie Lundin hit the post. Instead of an equalizer, Canada made it 3–1 on a long shot from Renata Fast for her second goal of the quarterfinals.

Sweden then looked to have scored through Lina Ljungblom, but the referee blew the whistle – even though the goalkeeper never had control of the puck.

    – It is the Canadian referee who blows the whistle. She’s just trying to explain that away. Embarrassing. It is a clear Swedish goal. It’s too bad, raged SVT’s commentator Chris Härenstam.

    Expert Maria Rooth filled in:

    – It’s a regular goal, shitty for the Swedes.

    Team captain: “Very frustrating”

Instead of a reduction, the numbers flowed and Canada eventually won 5–1.

    – The referee was a bit hot on the barrel and it becomes very frustrating. It could have changed the picture of the match properly. It’s really sad, says team captain Anna Kjellbin to SVT Sport after the match.

The referee is Canadian – how about that?

    – I had no idea about that. It does not surprise me.
