Ice hockey: Finland’s first team to defeat the USA

In a quick transition in three-on-three play, Finland got into a two-on-one situation. Tuomas Uronen kept the puck on his right flank and finished raptly at the nearest cross for 4-3 and great Finnish victory.

The USA had started with big wins against Germany and Latvia before the meeting with Finland.

Finland took over the game in the second period and could have led by more than the 3-2 they took into the third period.

After Finland managed a power play, however, the USA equalized at 3-3 through Brodie Ziemer, who held the puck down at the ice and with a backhand pushed the puck in from close range.

Several chances for both teams

Soon after, the USA had a great chance to take the lead but Gabe Perreault missed his second free throw of the game hitting the crossbar.

With eight minutes left to play, Kalle Kangas had an open goal to make it 4-3 for Finland but shot on center star James Hagen’s skate. Kangas could only shake his head.

Hagens then had an open chance to decide for the USA in the closing minutes but missed the puck and the opportunity slipped from his hands like slippery soap in the bathroom.
