33-year-old Erik Karlsson has not played national team hockey since the NHL-organized World Cup 2016, but now that his team Pittsburgh Penguins missed the playoffs, he has chosen to play. His first WC since 2012.

SVT’s expert Jonas Andersson thinks Tre Kronor is bringing in a brilliant player.
– It is of course a great reinforcement! I myself played the WC with Karlsson in 2010 and he has an ability to do the unexpected, while being completely unconcerned if he makes a mistake or two – exactly what Tre Kronor needs, he says.
In the past, NHL players Rasmus Dahlin, Joel Eriksson-Ek, André Burakovsky and Victor Olofsson have agreed to WC games.
This year’s Ice Hockey World Cup will be played in the Czech Republic May 10-26. Sweden is in the same group as the USA, Poland, Germany, Kazakhstan, Latvia, France and Slovakia.
