Ice hockey: Edmonton wins 14th straight – closing in on record

Goaltender Stuart Skinner made 27 saves and helped win his 11th straight game, breaking Grant Fuhr’s 1985-86 club record.

– It means a lot and was very emotional. It’s pretty cool to have broken a record held by one of the best goalkeepers to ever live on this earth. It’s a guy I looked up to and talked to. I’m very lucky to be able to beat the record, Skinner told the media afterwards.

Skinner has studied the 61-year-old Fuhr, who played for Edmonton from 1981-1991, at length. Fuhr was a legend who won the Stanley Cup four times in the 1980s.

“Watched every video of him”

– It’s crazy. My whole family has seen him play. I’ve seen every available video of him and all the incredible saves he’s made and his comments afterwards. “What he did for the club was really cool and he’s a Hall of Fame player,” said Skinner, who personally feels proud to be friends with the legend.

Edmonton has a tight defense and has been noted for a club record 12 consecutive games with only conceding a maximum of two goals.

Edmonton holds the record for the longest winning streak by a Canadian team and extended that record tonight.
