Food prices have hit records in the inflationary year of 2023, and 2024 has initially also meant higher increases than many had hoped for.

Nyheter24 has written about it before.

High food prices

And even if the increases in food prices stopped in the month of March and the worst increases are over, food prices will probably not be lowered to any significant extent. The high prices are here to stay.

Inflation on paper is not the same as inflation in the store, warns say Ulf Mazur who is CEO and founder of Matpriskollen. Food often increases in price more than the inflation figures from Statistics Sweden.

– When you see the numbers, it doesn’t look that serious. But out in the grocery store, where we actually buy our food, the yogurt can be from 23 to 25 kroner since before Easter. It’s around an 8.7 percent increase, and that’s how inflation works in practice, says Ulf Mazur to News24.

Ica, Coop, Hemköp and others raise the price

Unfortunately, the price of milk, cream and cheese rose shortly after the end of the month. This is because the compensation of the dairy products to the dairy farmers, and is not yet visible in the statistics.

It is stated in a press release at Matpriskollens website.

Milk, cream and butter

The increase applies from the turn of the month March-April, and applies to both cheese, cream, milk and butter.

– An Arla butter package increases, for example, at Ica Maxi by around 5 kroner and a liter of milk by between 50 öre and 1.50 kroner, says Ulf Mazur.

Even cheese has increased in price. Often with over 8 kroner.

The price of hard cheese at Ica and Hemköp will be increased by SEK 10

At Ica, for example, a 670-gram Arla Herrgård cheese costs SEK 81. That is SEK 8 more than before the end of the month, when it cost SEK 73. And if you convert to the kilo price, in other words, the cost is increased by more than SEK 10 per kilo.

At Hemköp, Arla’s Greveost rose from SEK 79 to SEK 87, an increase of SEK 8, which is in line with Ica Maxi, which increased by SEK 8 from SEK 84 to SEK 91.

– You should always look at the comparison price, says Ulf Mazur.

Statistics Sweden’s report

On Friday, Statistics Norway presents its inflation figures for March.

– You have to keep track of what happens in the food box. An increase in wages leads to higher prices in the store. What we see is that many dairies’ prices are increasing, and at stores that have increased, the increases are often between 5-10 percent, he says.

Buy at Willys instead

Several stores have already raised the prices of hard cheeses, milk products and butter. But one store chain that has not yet done so is Willys. This increase is nationwide and it is only a matter of time before the increase also reaches the discount giant.

– It probably has to do with Easter. They are behind on pricing. But for now you can find bargains there and save a few kroner on cheese, butter and milk, concludes Ulf Mazur.
