Turtle Beach has introduced its next generation of gaming headsets, the Stealth 700 Gen 3. MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann was able to take a look at the headset and listen to it briefly at gamescom 2024.
Turtle Beach now has the third generation of its Stealth 700 in the starting blocks. The new gaming headset will be released on September 22, 2024 for a price of 199.99 euros. The device is compatible with PCs, mobile phones and all common game consoles.
At Gamescom I already had the chance to pick up the new gaming headset and listen to it briefly. My first impression is positive, but there are still a few question marks that will only be answered after a proper test.
New gaming headset comes with two wireless adapters at the same time
What is special about it? Turtle Beach uses two dongles for its 3rd generation headset. You can plug one into your PS5 and the other into your gaming PC. With a single button press, you can then quickly switch between your platforms. This way, you can first play on the PS5 and then later switch to your PC without having to plug in a dongle. This is great for people like me who play on multiple platforms at the same time.
What unfortunately doesn’t work: You can’t use the sound through both dongles at the same time, you always have to choose one connection.
What does work, however, is that you can use the headset via dongle and Bluetooth at the same time. This way you can play on the PS5 and take a call on your cell phone at the same time. This “dual connection” feature is nothing new and is now supported by many manufacturers, such as Razer or SteelSeries.
What is my first impression? The headset fits very tightly around your ears, so you only notice a little of your surroundings, as is typical for a closed headset. This means that the focus is strongly on the sound and noises that you hear through the headset.
When I wore them briefly at gamescom, I was able to listen to music and a game (Wuthering Wave). My first impression is pretty positive. The sound is powerful and the closed headset brings out the sound surprisingly well.
What I also liked is the workmanship of the headset. There are many metal components used, which make the headset seem very high quality at first glance. The ear pads can be removed and replaced. The main body is still made of plastic, similar to its predecessor.
What bothers me? The artificial leather padding gets very warm, especially in summer. I would have liked alternative fabric padding. Logitech offers this for its “G Pro X” headset series, for example.
It’s a shame, but it’s bearable: the dongles are for USB-A and not for USB-C. The dongles don’t work with the Steam Deck or other gaming handhelds, so you’ll have to use Bluetooth.
There are still question marks regarding ergonomics and battery life
What can I not say anything about? I wasn’t able to test the microphone. As someone who uses a table microphone anyway, the microphone plays a rather minor role for me.
I can’t say anything about the battery life either. Turtle Beach states the battery life as “up to 80 hours”. The headset is robust, but also quite heavy. I can’t say yet whether I’ll feel the headset on my head and ears after 8 hours.
Another sticking point is ergonomics: I personally have not had any problems with Turtle Beach headsets, but I know from colleagues that the headsets can put a lot of pressure on large heads over time. I personally found the predecessor, the 700 Gen 2 MAX, to be very comfortable, while colleagues found the opposite.
