“I will come back to put this country back on its feet”

I will come back to put this country back on

Jair Bolsonaro in Juiz de Fora, and Lula da Silva in São Bernardo do Campo, in the suburbs of São Paulo. A kind of homecoming for the former Brazilian president.

With our correspondent in São Paulo, Martin Bernard

At 76, Lula embarked on his sixth presidential campaign with, he says, the energy of a 30-year-old man. Its activists were gathered in front of the suburban factory, where the former president began his career as a trade unionist.

Lula attacked his opponent directly, his speech on weapons, and reproaching him for having done nothing to fight against the Covid.

We do not want a government that distributes weapons. We want a government that distributes books. We don’t want a government that breeds hatred. We want a government that speaks of love. You haven’t shed a single tear for the 680,000 people who have died from Covid.

Lula insisted on the seriousness of the social situation, referring to the return of hunger among the population.

Brazil is the third largest food producer in the world. It is not possible that there are 33 million people who are hungry. I’m going to come back so that we put this country back on its feet, so that we can create jobs.

A big favorite in the polls, Lula also complained about the false news spread by the opposing camp, especially in evangelical circles.
