Female performers in Hollywood have had the problem of being stylized as sex objects for the camera for a long time. Marvel star Scarlett Johansson also struggled with it in her first MCU appearance in Iron Man 2. But her sexualization in the film, in her opinion, began much earlier.

On the podcast Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi, she said:
I did Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring. And at that point, when I was like 18, 19 years old, I got to know my own desirability and sexuality. I was basically made into a bombshell-type actress. I played [ständig] the object of desire and was trapped in it.
The best-known example of such a role to date is also Johansson’s best-known. Black Widow was little more than a lust object for Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) when she first appeared in Iron Man 2. The actress herself initially thought her character was “underdeveloped and oversexualized“.

Since then, the star’s role profile has evolved immensely, particularly through her own power. Most recently, with appearances in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, she once again made it clear that how multifaceted her talent is. And how much she deserves complex characters.
