“I warned you and you didn’t listen to me”

In his sci-fi film Terminator (1984), film director James Cameron showed a world in which artificial intelligence opposes humanity. As he revealed in an interview, the film isn’t that far-fetched. He considers the development of AI to be a real threat.

In an interview with CTV News on July 18, 2023, the well-known filmmaker spoke about artificial intelligence (AI) and explained why he believes the technology is dangerous for humanity.

“Weaponizing AI is the greatest danger”

As James Cameron said in the interview, he agrees with people who believe that AI and its development pose a serious threat to humanity.

The director would have already made his opinion on the subject clear through his film Terminator: “I warned you in 1984, but you didn’t listen to me.”

The filmmaker also said that when it comes to AI, it is very important to look at who was behind the technology development and why you are doing it, for example to make a profit.

He is particularly critical of artificial intelligence in the military sector: “I think the weaponization of AI is the greatest danger.” The director fears a kind of competition between the different countries that could escalate:

I think that we are going to get into a kind of nuclear arms race with AI, and if we don’t build it, the others will certainly build it, and then it will escalate.

You could imagine an AI in a combat zone and the whole thing is being fought by the computers at a speed where humans can no longer intervene and you have no possibility of de-escalation.
