Ludvig Åberg is heading towards another successful major.
Now comes a real tribute – from Henrik Stenson, who highlights one detail in particular.
– It’s an old head on young shoulders, he says.
It was just over a year ago that Ludvig Åberg, after several successful years as an amateur, chose to become a professional. And then it went very quickly. Åberg quickly started winning on the European Tour and without having played a single major, he was selected for Europe’s Ryder Cup team, where the success only continued.
Stenson’s great tribute
During the second part of 2023, Åberg was one of the world’s best golfers, and he climbed the world rankings like a rocket. In April, he made his major debut when he was sensationally second at the legendary Augusta National, and despite having only been a professional for a year, he is currently sixth in the world rankings.
On Thursday, Åberg made his very first start in a US Open, the major competition known to be the toughest, and where the winning score is generally the highest, with tough greens and unforgiving course conditions. But Åberg just continues to shock the golf world, and after the first day he is second in the competition, at four under par. Now Åberg is praised to the skies by Sweden’s only major winner on the men’s side, Henrik Stenson – who above all highlights a special detail.
– It’s usually such a cliché, that it’s an old head on young shoulders, that’s a bit much. He feels very calm and mentally stable. It will be very exciting to follow his development going forward, says Stenson to Radiosporten.
Reveals the SMS
Henrik Stenson has been very impressed by Åberg over the past year, and especially by what he performed during the Masters in April.
– He has had a rocket speed from when he went over and became a professional. In just half a season he really established himself in the absolute top, and then Masters debut and came second there is incredibly impressive. Augusta is a difficult course, it usually takes a number of years to learn it. But I followed his last lap there and watched him challenge Scottie Scheffler for the win. It was an impressive premiere, he says.
Henrik Stenson also reveals that he sent an SMS to Åberg after the Masters, where he clearly meant that Åberg has the future ahead of him.
– I texted him afterwards and wrote that he probably has an 80 major ahead of him in the next 20 years, so it’s just a matter of maintaining patience and putting himself in situations, then there is a very good chance that he can beat me by at least one major ahead.
