I thought that after Hots no Moba ties me – now I’m captured again

Meinmmo-Demon Cortyn had actually completed Mobas. But now a “new, old” favorite is back – and better than ever.

Mobas and I have a little love of hate. I only gave League of Legends a few minutes and then quickly decided that my lifetime is too good for me to deal with the (at least then) extremely toxic community.

Then Smit came, which I liked due to the 3RD-person view and the action feeling. I liked the gods and for a while it was really fun. For a while I really liked to play it – until the community went too much on my pointer and my circle of friends slowly went out of the Moba.

Finally, Heroes of the Storm came, which I still play today, even if the game is actually dead and only gets minimal balance patches. There is no longer any new content.

I thought it would stay that way. Mobas and I, we were just done with each other.

But now Smit 2 has started in the Open Beta on Steam – and what can I say? I receded again. Basically, I have hardly played anything else for the last 2 weeks and spent almost continuously for two or three in the new edition of the Götter-Moba.

Autoplay

Even if it is still a beta, it becomes more than clear that Smit 2 is a clear improvement to the predecessor and yet remains true to the principles of the game.

Why is there actually SMITE 2?

The reason for Smite 2 is the outdated engine of the predecessor. Smite 1 was based on the Unreal Engine 3 and it is now getting a bit old. The players seemed sensible to make the game for the much newer unreal engine 5 – and so Smit 2 was born.

But what distinguishes Smit 2 from his predecessor?

At first glance: not much. There are the same gods, if significantly less of it. The gameplay is almost identical, the Moba bike was not reinvented here. There are lanes, items, skills and lots of skill shots.

Anyone who played Smite 1 can basically find their way around Smit 2 immediately.

But it is the many small changes in detail that make Smit 2 a fundamentally better game and an update that was simply necessary.

Most of the gods look much better than in Smit 1 – even if the variety of skins are still missing.

Almost all gods have been revised and have new functions or skills, even if the basic skills are still almost identical. So much more gods are no longer just scaling with intelligence or strength, but often with both. This allows you to achieve different facets and set a focus.

Do you want to make the archer Neith a character with a high speed speed that quickly plows away the life points? Or do you prefer to concentrate on a few strong auto attacks, which are eliminated with critical goals, especially the opposing magicians and hunters? Or do you give Neith an absurd amount of intelligence and thereby increase the effectiveness of your skills for high burst damage?

The freedom, a god or goddess according to his own ideas and a little different in every round are significantly larger than in Smit 1. Sure, a patch in Smit 1 could have changed – but that’s how it feels with that Just switch to a new game.

In addition, gods now get “aspects” in turn. These are optional “alternatives” of a God that can be activated before the start of a match. As a result, the skills of God are slightly modified or get new mechanics. Two examples:

The god Thanatos actually heals through its passive effect when it causes damage, kills gods and servants. However, this healing can be deactivated and instead ensure that the maximum life points of Thanatos rise every time it kills something. As a result, Thanatos can be played even more effectively than a tank.

Smite 2, on the whole, looks much better, even if the gameplay is almost identical.

The magic goddess Hecate can usually cover a large area with an area. Within this area, the skills used by all gods charge their spell, which they can then unleash in order to cause great damage. If you don’t want this, you can modify the ability with your aspect so that it reduces the damage caused by enemies in the target area and automatically fires a (significantly weaker) floor when someone has an ability.

Even if not all gods have such aspects, these adaptation options remind me a little of the talent system from Heroes of the Storm-not as extensive, but interesting enough to enable new strategies and tactics.

The thing with the skins

The only big point of criticism that I see again and again is the thing with the skins. The accusation here is that Smith wants to “rip off” the player by having to buy already purchased content again – just in Smith 2.

This accusation is right, but only very limited.

What is often kept silent: If you buy the god passport for Smit 2 – with which you have all the gods that will ever appear for the game – then there are some bonuses associated with this. The most important bonus is that the amount of jewels you bought in Smite 1 is given in a doubled form in Smith 2 in the form of legacy jewels.

So if you bought 10,000 jewels in Smit 1, you will receive 2 a total of 20,000 “Legacy” jewels in Smite.

Half of the legacy jewels can be used to pay new skins and other content. Until you have output all legacy jewels, new skins cost only half.

In addition, many of the “old” skins can be bought completely with Legacy jewels, so that you can withdraw a good part of the popular skins.

The descriptions are detailed – but clear.

I thought about it for a long time and find the system quite fair. Smit 2 earns good money on new skins, at the same time as a veteran from Smite 1 you have a fairly thick amount of legacy jewels for which you can still get a lot.

However, it should also be clear: Smite 2 is Free2Play. You have to buy none of this and you can have fun playing the game without much restrictions. Even as a Free2Play player, you can quickly unlock new gods.

Smite 2 is worth more than just a short look

Smit 2 is pretty, rounder and more versatile than Smit 1. And if you get over the fact that you cannot take all of Smit 1 with you, you should take a look at the successor. I have had a lot of fun there for the last few weeks – and the start is still relatively easy, because many of the old gods are now published every week, so that you can learn very easily what the individual gods can do.

In any case, I notice that the suction caught me again and I can really let myself go into a game that I actually thought that I had already written it down long ago. For this alone, it is worth taking a look at Smite 2.
