‘I think E3 killed itself’ – Geoff Keighley doesn’t think his new event was to blame for E3’s death

Geoff Keighley is known as the host of numerous gaming shows. In 2020 he founded his own event, which is supposed to show a large number of trailers this year, while E3 was canceled again.

Who is Geoff Keighley?

  • Geoff Keighley is a Canadian video game journalist best known for hosting numerous gaming events
  • Keighley regularly hosts major shows that feature many trailers. These include the annual Game Awards and the gamescom Opening Night Live
  • In 2020, Keighley launched his own gaming event, Summer Game Fest
  • Which gaming event is it about? At the Summer Game Fest (SGF), founded by Keighley in 2020, video game publishers and developers have the opportunity to present their new games in more detail with trailers or even to announce them for the first time.

The event takes place digitally and is specifically aimed at companies that do not host their own events such as the PlayStation Showcase, Ubisoft Forward or the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase.

During the show, moderated by Keighley himself, gaming fans see a veritable thunderstorm of trailers, as is the case with SGF 2022. Cinematics and gameplay recordings are shown every minute – there is not much talk between the individual games.

The Summer Game Fest 2023 takes place on June 08, 2023 and starts at 21:00. MeinMMO will accompany the event with a live ticker.

“The E3 kind of killed itself”

What does Keighley say about the death of the E3? In a podcast with the English online magazine VideoGamesChronicle, Geoff Keighley commented on the death of the E3 – the formerly biggest gaming event of the year will not take place in 2023. E3 was also canceled in 2022.

On the podcast, Keighley was asked about being considered the “E3 Killer,” to which he replied:

I think the E3 kind of killed itself. I understand why people say that [das SGF die E3 getötet hat]but I think if anything, we started Summer Game Fest, and I built Summer Game Fest because I saw E3 lag behind.

Additionally, Keighley adds that he didn’t see himself competing with E3 as Summer Game Fest is a digital-only show streamed live. In 2020, when E3 was canceled due to the corona pandemic, he wanted to create an opportunity to bring gaming news to the fans.

For 2023, Keighley assumed the SGF and E3 would go separate ways and not compete with each other. His event would be digital and show trailers, while E3 would do the rest at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

In the podcast, Keighley suspects that the reason for E3’s death was that E3 had had a relevance and participation problem in the past few years and asked what would have happened if they hadn’t founded the SGF.

Shortly after E3 2023 was canceled, Keighley spoke about the death of the gaming event. He said he had already suspected in 2019 that E3 had no future.
