Nathan Fillion is best known today for his role as the greenhorn John Nolan in the crime hit The Rookie. However, 21 years ago, the series that many still consider to be the best in Fillion’s filmography ended: Firefly. His former co-star Jewel Staite will never forget working with him.
Firefly star Jewel Staite learned tricks from Nathan Fillion
Staite took on the role of Kaywinnet Lee “Kaylee” Frye in Joss Whedon’s cult series and appeared alongside Fillion as a crew member of the spaceship Serenity in 14 episodes and one film. Even today, she often thinks back to working on Firefly, as she revealed to Bleeding Cool:
I don’t know what it is – maybe it has something to do with the short life of the series. But she was this underdog at the time and it was about a group of underdogs fighting against a big company. People jumped on it and made it their own and became part of the story.
The cast remained in close contact after the series was canceled, even though they only spent six months together filming. When Staite and Fillion finally met again on the set of the film White Noise: Fear the Light, they were able to rekindle their connection:
He is the best. He taught me so much about being number one and I stole so many tricks from himshameless, how you act on set, how you treat people, create a good vibe, all that stuff. It’s because of him and what I saw when I was 19 that I wanted to capture, to create a perfect vibe, because I think it rubs off from the top. If the person at the top shows a level of humor and gratitude and kindness, then everyone else will follow.

So she still gets the best advice from the rookie star today – even if it sometimes hurts:
I still ask Nathan for advice often. When I don’t know what to do, I write to him and explain the situation and ask him what he would do and he always gives me the best advice. Even if I don’t want to hear it, even if it’s not what I wanted to hear, he gives me advice on how to proceed, and he’s always right.Where can you watch Firefly with Nathan Fillion and Jewel Staite?
