Single or married, the amount of taxes will not be the same this year depending on your situation.

This is one of the big topics of the moment. Given the prevailing political instability, the question of the amount of taxes to pay in 2025 arises for many French people. With the mention of censorship adopted and the 2025 budget still not finalized, the alert given in recent weeks could well come true: 17 million households could pay more to the tax authorities next year compared to this year.

Faced with this statement made by the former Minister of the Budget, what would really be the impact on the wallets of the people concerned? The Internet user did the calculations, based on a median retirement of 1,500 euros net per month, after taxes. This is broken down into 1000 euros of basic pension (CNAV/Carsat) and 500 euros of supplementary private pension (Agirc-Arrco). Here are the results in two scenarios.

Let’s take a first case of a retiree living alone. In 2024, this single person aged over 65 will receive approximately 1,500 euros in retirement each month in his bank account. In January 2024, he received 1000 euros from CNAV then 500 euros from Agirc-Arrco. From February, he benefited from the increase in the basic pension of 5.3%. His monthly total therefore increased to €1,553. Finally, in November and December, his remuneration increased to €1,561 after the supplementary pension increased by 1.6%. He did not resort to any reduction or tax credit. It is therefore a very simple declaration that he will make to the tax authorities in the spring.

When he has transmitted his income, the Public Treasury will not claim anything from him. Whether the calculation scale is indexed to inflation or not, the sixty-year-old will not have €1 to pay in taxes. For a married couple, also aged over 65, whose two members both earn around 1500 euros, like our single person, the situation will not be the same. If deputies and senators increase the tax calculation scale, our retirees will have to pay €185. On the other hand, in the event of no indexation, the bill will rise to €296. That’s €111 more.

These calculations were carried out on the basis of simple declarations, without any reduction or tax credit, and on the principle of similar income between adults. Verified with the official tax simulator, the amounts indicated correspond to the total to be paid over the year, i.e. withholding tax included.
