There are always anime games coming out on the PS5, mostly Dragon Ball. Many of these games have a rather mediocre reputation, but MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes loves them anyway and has done so for as long as he can remember.
Anime and video games have been with me my whole life. It’s good for me that the two things are often combined. I started devouring anime games when I got the PS2. I’m particularly fond of Dragon Ball and Naruto games.
This continues to this day, as I regularly buy anime games, especially on the PS5. Admittedly, many of them are mediocre, some are even total garbage, but if I’m honest, I still love these games.

The child in me wants to live in an anime
Anime games are a nostalgic trip. Whenever I watched an anime as a child, I always wanted to play the fights myself. This was already possible with the PS2. I devoured Dragon Ball Budokai 3. And I was always trying to persuade my sister to play.
Even today, I still have that child inside me. The thought that I can have several anime heroes compete against each other in Jump Force still makes me happy, even though Jump Force is a real disaster. But games like Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions also appeal to me. And I have absolutely no interest in football.
The many what-if questions are also an important point. Who hasn’t always wanted to play as Muten Roshi against Cell in Dragon Ball? In games like this, it’s possible.
I just love trash
Despite the great love I have for these games, I have to admit that most of them are rather mediocre. The graphics are often not up to date and the mechanics are also usually rudimentary. Fighting fans in particular are often confronted with half-baked 3D fighters.
But I’m totally into it. Balancing? Nobody cares. These games are full of unfair moves that you can spam and characters that are just so much better at everything than other characters. In a competitive fighting game, that would bother me, but annoying my friends with a single move is just fun.
But other genres give me this joy too. Did you know that there is a 3rd person shooter for Tokyo Ghoul? Well, now you know and it’s really bad. But something like this evokes a nostalgic feeling, a longing for simpler times. Times when, as a child, you played every bad licensed software that was given to you.
But where I draw the line are really boring games. One Piece Odyssey comes to mind straight away. It’s not really bad, but it’s not really fun or good either.
On the other hand, there are of course also really great games. Dragon Ball FighterZ and Demon Slayer The Hinokami Chronicles immediately come to mind.

The experience with friends
Anime games are better when you enjoy them together. The good thing about most console versions of these games is that you can play them on the couch with friends. And I do that regularly. Since my friends are also anime fans, everyone has their own favorite in these games, which always creates a little rivalry when playing against each other.
The other point that has to do with the trash factor is the shared fun of bugs, stupid abilities, but also ultimate moves that you enjoy watching. And of course a bit of anger is also part of it. If you don’t get angry at the colleague who just beat you, then something is missing.
The simple gameplay mechanics of anime games are actually a huge advantage in this regard, as you can learn and understand the games faster than in complex fighting games.
I don’t buy most anime games when they’re released. The trashy fun is actually too expensive for me. The nice thing about such games is that they often go on sale very quickly.
