I hunted with my Samurai demons in an alternative to Dark Souls over 100 hours, now you get the game at half price

Meinmmo author Ody has been hunting for demons in feudal Japan in Nioh 2 for over 100 hours, now you get the action role-playing game at Steam at half price.

Nioh 2 is an action role-playing game for the PC as well as PS4 and PS5. The game only appeared for the PS4 in 2020. The release on Steam and Epic Games Store followed in 2021. Nioh 2 has a total of 88 % positive reviews on Steam.

Until February 6, Nioh 2 is available on Steam at half price, i.e. for only 29.99 euros. All DLCs for the game are already included in this version.

As Samurai on the hunt for evil spirits

Nioh 2 send you into the Japan of the Sengoku era. At that time, the country was divided under the rule of different war princes. However, the world of Nioh 2 differs somewhat from the relay, because it is haunted by demons.

These demons are called Yokai, which is a term for many types of supernatural beings in Japanese – demons are only one of them, but the term fits quite well here. Yokai come from Japanese mythology and come in all possible sizes and shapes.

However, the first boss in the game is the character editor: it fails much more in more detail than you may be used to from the Souls series or Elden Ring. For your main character you also choose a Yokai form, because you are half human, half Yokai.

A complex combat system that wants to be mastered

Due to its level of difficulty, Nioh 2 is often referred to as soulslike. I would underline that, but the game also goes many of its own ways in which it differs quite a bit from the Souls games. Loving one does not necessarily mean that you will like the other – I am lucky enough to love both.

The combat system in Nioh 2 does not only consist of blocks, strike, avoid and strike again. There are three different stances, i.e. combat positions that need to be mastered:

  • The high stance costs you more AI (perseverance) and is a little slower, but also reports more damage
  • The low stance is the fastest and AI-friendly, but also adds the least damage
  • The Mid Stance offers a balance made of high and low
  • Some types of opponents are particularly sensitive or resistant to attacks from a certain combat position. You shouldn’t even attack big monsters like the Yoki or Enki with the low stance, but the little gaki can be easily clapped away.

After an attack, you can change your stance for the next attack and do combos. As a result, the fights are not only much faster and more action-oriented, they I was still fun after over 100 hours. Again and again I was able to try out new strong combos and didn’t just drive the same tactics again and again.

Due to the different positions, fights are nice and dynamic.

Focus on loot and grind that is fun

You can find weapons and armor much more often in Nioh 2 – almost too often. If you don’t stop by the blacksmith regularly, you spend a lot of time to disassemble scrap, especially in the later course of the game if you want to clean up your inventory. That can be annoying, but there are also many good loot and chic armor sets.

Incidentally, Nioh 2 has no open world. Instead, you take on missions from your hub, which lead you into smaller, sometimes larger levels. Set up to repeat them more often to upgrade your character. You shouldn’t be averse to a certain grind if you play Nioh 2. However, since the combat system does not wear out so quickly, the grind hardly bothers.

Even if I already have around 100 hours in the game (but also on several characters), you won’t take that long if you only want to play through the main story. Around 45 hours are sufficient for this (via howlongtobeat.com).

If you are unsure about the two in the name: To find your way around in Nioh 2, you don’t necessarily have to have played the predecessor. If you still want to start in part 1, you will Nioh on Steam for the price of a McDonalds menu, because the game now only costs € 9.99.
