An almost 10-year-old building game on Steam has almost been written off by its fans. Now the developers are surprising with a completely new expansion.
If you’re one of those players who didn’t really know anything about Besiege until now, the concept is still explained pretty quickly. In the medieval building game on Steam, you build to destroy. Because with the machines and creations you have built, you set out to destroy a few peaceful villages.
Now a new trailer announced the first expansion to the game. This was particularly surprising to fans because they had apparently already given up on the title:
Why was the expansion so surprising? To understand why the developers were so surprising with this expansion, you have to look at a little bit of the game’s history. Because Besiege started early access almost 10 years ago and then finally released a full version in 2020.
After that, however, it was quiet about the game and new content for a long time. There were a few smaller updates here and there with new blocks, but nothing major that could expand the gaming experience.
However, the ratings seem to be hardly influenced by this. To date, the community rates the game 95% positively. Even the most recent reviews on Steam are 96% “extremely positive.”
What awaits you in the expansion? With “The Splintered Sea” Besiege is actually getting its first major expansion. This should be available on Steam from May 24, 2024.
As the trailer shows, everything in this expansion takes place on and under the water. You build your machines directly on the sea and your goal is to destroy other things. You can expect 10 new levels, as well as a new sandbox and new items to match the water theme.
In the campaign you face new enemies, the so-called “strangers”. They have occupied a number of islands and now you want to destroy their fleet, galleons and underwater fortress. There are also some nasty creatures underwater that are just waiting to fight you.
How does the community react? Many fans apparently no longer expected new content. This becomes clear if you look at the comments under the trailer (via YouTube).
For example, user user-mq1rz5mf8h writes that he has actually given up the game because he hasn’t seen any new information for so long. Regarding the new DLC, he only adds: “They announced a water DLC, damn legends”.

What is your opinion? Have you played Besiege and are you now looking forward to the first big expansion? Feel free to write in the comments.
Another game on Steam uses a similar concept to Besiege: Steam: In the new game DEMOLITION you build only to destroy: Has 87% positive reviews and costs €15
