Elvira Öberg had an absolutely brilliant start to the season.
But then the nightmare began for the Swedish 24-year-old.
Now she opens up with brutally honest words about the tough times.
Before the season, expectations were sky high for the Swedish hope Elvira Öberg. She was a heavy favorite to win the overall World Cup and was expected to reap great success at the 2023 Biathlon World Cup in Oberhof.
Elvira’s success
It also started in the best way when the 24-year-old lined up victories and podiums at the World Cup. Already in January, little sister Öberg had won four races and taken eight podium places at the World Cup if you count both individually and relay.

After that, it was time to bet on the WC and Elvira chased her very first WC gold in her career. But the championship in Oberhof would develop into a pure nightmare for the Swedish medal favorite.

World Cup nightmare
Because even though the Swedish national skiing team had its best world championship ever with the most medals won, Öberg did not contribute to a single medal. Instead it was older sister Hanna Öberg who was crowned WC queen with double gold medals.

Elvira was forced to cancel race after race due to a persistent cold and had the entire WC ruined. Even when the World Cup started again, the Swede did not manage to recover from the illness and the body did not respond to the training.

Öberg’s words
The end of the season was therefore very tough for Elvira Öberg, who started the season so incredibly well. Now she opens up about the strong feelings after this difficult year.
“A season that in many ways was far from what I dreamed of. But I choose to try to look at it in a different way, because after all, I actually achieved my big goal for the season – which is to show that I am up to this level to stay. Because as long as I had the right conditions, I performed very, very well, and I really take that with me,” writes an emotional Elvira on Instagram, see the picture below, and also wants to thank you for all the fantastic support she received through the difficulties.
“Then I also had time to learn something, e.g. that you cannot control everything. You can only do your best and even then you can still get sick. Then I also learned what amazing support I have from all of you who follow me. The support and love I have received in recent weeks is something I will never forget, it has meant an awful lot. Thanks for that.”
Now a long holiday awaits for Öberg, who has time to recover both physically and mentally in order to come back to next season in full force. And then once again get to show what enormous potential she has as a biathlete.
“Now it will be nice to have plenty of time for recovery, both for the body and the head. So I’m ready to do the work later and give myself the opportunity to achieve those dreams next season,” writes the 24-year-old on Instagram.
Elvira Öberg also receives great support from the Swedish people for this post in social media, see the picture below. Many have contacted her with supportive words after the tough time.
“You are so good. Looking forward to next season!”, writes one user.
“Damn what you’ve delivered,” writes another.
“Fight, come on, win the overall cup next season! You are the best,” writes a third.
