“I have no reason to come online right now” – players talk about the current lull

Helldivers 2 is currently experiencing a lull. The number of players on Steam is at an all-time low and fans of the shooter can well understand this.

What kind of lull is this? At the beginning of the year, Helldivers 2 was one of the hyped games alongside the survival game Palworld and thrilled hundreds of thousands of players. The co-op shooter reached its Steam peak of just over 458,000 in February, but after that it went steadily downhill.

In June 2024, Helldivers had a peak of just under 91,700 players on Steam, with an average of 40,400 people on the servers. In February, an average of 274,000 players plunged into the galactic war (via SteamCharts).

If we look at the average number of players, Helldivers 2 has lost around 85% of its players since February – and there are currently no signs that the downward trend could stop.

Fans can understand the drop in player numbers

What do the fans say about the lull? Many players can understand the current lull. However, for many, this is not due to any problems, such as the fiasco with the Playstation accounts, but rather to the lack of new content.

For example, user “SilicaBags” writes on Reddit: “I haven’t avoided the game in protest of anything. I’m just bored and have no reason to start it other than to get MO medals [Anm. d. Red.: MO= Major Order, deutsch: Generalbefehl] to spend.”

Player “Dyyrin” takes a similar tack with his comment, saying: “I plan to return when new factions come. I’m tired of defending the same planets and fighting the same two factions.” Over 2,200 users show their approval with an upvote.

Another user writes on Reddit: “Unfortunately, it got boring way too quickly for me. I haven’t even reached the maximum level yet, but I was tired of the grind.”

How could Helldivers turn things around? Palword is currently showing that a major update can at least partially bring players back. While the survival game only had a peak of just under 45,000 players in May, the “Sakurajima Update” released at the end of June was able to increase the numbers to 143,000 players.

Helldivers could experience something similar with a major update that, for example, brings new enemies. Fans of the co-op shooter have been waiting for the arrival of the Illuminated for months.
