    At the heart of rumors about a supposed pregnancy, Hailey Bieber, model and beauty influencer, delivered on a much less happy state of health: the young woman is, in fact, suffering from an imposing ovarian cyst.

    No, Hailey Bieber is not pregnant. The young woman, recently elected fashion icon of 2022, wanted to make things clear after a photo revealing a plump belly (this famous “baby-bump” scrutinized among stars) arousing many reactions among her fans. The reality is much less joyful than a birth to come, since the wife of Justin Bieber suffers, in fact, from an ovarian cyst which causes him pain on a daily basis.

    “It’s painful and it makes me nauseous”

    “It’s not a baby” said the model on Instagram, a network she is particularly fond of, before revealing the diagnosis. “I have a cyst on my ovary the size of an apple. I don’t have endometriosis or PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome editor’s note), but I’ve had an ovarian cyst several times and it’s never fun” she confessed. Justin Bieber’s wife continued by confiding in her state of health because of this cyst: “It’s painful and it gives me nausea, bloating, cramps and emotions. In short, I’m sure many of you can relate and understand.”

    What is an ovarian cyst?

    The ovarian cyst is indeed an extremely frequent pathology, “this is a situation encountered in approximately one in two women with reproductive activity” confirms Dr. Bruno Deval, surgeon-gynecologist, “and it can be completely asymptomatic” he continues.

    According to the expert, two types of ovarian cysts can appear in women:

    • Functional cysts, linked to the cycle and to ovulation;
    • Solid or tissue cysts, which have different anamorpho-pathological forms and which are benign in 8 out of 10 cases.

    The symptomatology is very simple: either the women are completely asymptomatic, and it is often a fortuitous discovery during another examination which updates the existence of a cyst.

    Either the woman feels a heaviness, a torsion with pain, which can lead to vomiting for example. It is then necessary to act: this type of cyst can rupture, twist, compress neighboring organs…

    What therapeutic approach to take with an ovarian cyst?

    The attitude to take in case of discovery of a cyst depends on its nature.

    “If it’s a functional cyst, you just have to watch it” reassure the surgeon. However beyond a size of 5 cm, an MRI is necessary” he specifies. “In the case of a tissue cyst, on the other hand, an MRI is always carried out. And we are also looking for tumor markers, there are 6 to do”.

    If the cyst is disturbing, it turns out to be dangerous and it must be removed, the surgeon then proceeds to minimally invasive surgery, under laparoscopy, called ovarian cystectomy.. Then the cyst can be analyzed. Everything happens, most of the time, in outpatient surgery.

    In her post, Hailey Bieber, she does not mention surgery. But for Dr. Bruno Deval, the question in his case does not arise: “if the cyst reaches the size of an apple or an orange, it is necessary to operate”.
