“I hated the combat system and then stopped behaving like a caveman”

If there is criticism of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is primarily the combat system. This still causes problems today – until you get over your own shadow.

Today, no one needs to be told that Baldur’s Gate 3 was an absolute mega-success. But there are certainly some buyers who are not so impressed with the game. The combat system in particular can be overwhelming, complex or simply confusing and frustrating for newcomers to the genre. Because if you don’t understand all the options the game offers, many conflicts end in the destruction of your own group.

In a post on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit, Henryh0over2 talks about his experience with the game. At first, he was not at all impressed with the combat system and actually hated it. He talks about this in the post “I hated combat until I stopped acting like a caveman”.

I really loved the roleplaying and world of this game, but the combat was so frustrating. I just kept running head first into fights and almost always died.

I got to the Goblin Camp and died 5 times or so, always to that hobgoblin leader, until I started tactically spreading my characters around the map. My rogue on the upper floor was stealthily shooting the goblins, Karlach in the middle while Gale and Shadowheart placed spells near the ladders and then it just clicked.

It’s slowly becoming one of the best games I’ve ever played.

A finding that is apparently also praised in the community, as the post has now received over 1,500 upvotes and lots of comments.

Community gives even more tips: The community is quick to step in and give him lots of tips on how to make the battles more enjoyable and interesting. Because to really enjoy Baldur’s Gate 3, you have to forget most of what you’ve learned about video games so far – otherwise you won’t see all the options that Baldur’s Gate 3 offers you.

  • “Now the fun begins. Don’t be afraid to try crazy/creative things. Most items can be interacted with and thrown, including enemies. Throwing goblins at each other with Karlach is just plain fun, and some of the consumables you can get are very useful too.” – dmfuller
  • “I totally get it! This isn’t your typical RPG where you just run in with your team and fire everything until you win. I had to run away from fights and only managed to do so by throwing a bottle of goo that made enemies slip. It’s a lot of fun, but also very frustrating at times.” – Comfortable-Bus-8840
  • Nevertheless, there are always people who would have preferred an option in Baldur’s Gate 3 to activate a “real-time” combat mode. But that would have led to a lot of problems given the complexity of the skills and the tactical finesse. If you want to give the game another chance – if you find a special cut scene, you could win €470.

Did you get used to the combat system in Baldur’s Gate 3 and learn to love the tactical subtleties and possibilities? Or did the system put you off as well?
