“I finally understand why people invest so much money”

Star Citizen is an absolute phenomenon. Since 2014, it has thrilled tens of thousands of fans and raised over $600 million through crowdfunding. CitizenCon took place in October, where many new videos and information about the MMO were shared. Twitch streamer Asmongold watched one of these videos and was very impressed.

What was that video? Asmongold took a look at the Star Engine Tech Demo that was released at the show. The video is almost 24 minutes long and shows various planets, the landscapes and the buildings that you can enter. Space travel and public transport, which are reminiscent of the Transrapid, can also be seen.

All content shown comes from Star Citizen itself, with loading screens and long flight times removed, as the video reveals at the beginning.

How does the streamer react to this? He’s impressed from minute one. He says early on in the video, in a scene showing the inside of a base station, that the game feels very realistic and populated.

“I can understand why people would spend money on it.”

Above all, the varied biomes, the high level of detail and the sheer size of the game left a lasting impression. He was particularly impressed by a place with a dark spaceport and many veils of fog.

At the end he summarizes again: “I now understand why people wait 11 years for this game and invest so much money. […] I’m so happy I saw this video.”

Star Citizen impresses at the new trade fair, also with its single-player content

What else was shown at CitizenCon? The big highlight of the trade fair was a video for the single-player campaign Squadron 42. Tactical first-person shooter combat and stealth elements were presented there. Some big Hollywood stars also made an appearance, including:

  • Mark Hamill (Star Wars)
  • Gillian Anderson (The X-Files)
  • Gary Oldman (The 5th Element)
  • The campaign was actually supposed to appear in 2014, but there is still no release date. However, it was revealed that Squadron 42 is now “feature complete”. So all the content is ready, now it’s time to fine-tune and fix errors.

    Autoplay

Can you already play Star Citizen? Yes, although you have to spend money to get access. If you only want access to the multiplayer part, you can find initial packages for around $50. Here you can get the MMO, which is currently in the alpha phase.

However, you don’t have access to detached game elements, such as the aforementioned Squadron 42. There are also dozens of other packages that differ in the ships as rewards.

Is it worth playing now? That depends entirely on your own requirements. The game offers many functions, but is far from complete. New updates also always bring problems.

In addition, there can always be complete wipes, as was the case most recently in September 2021: Star Citizen takes away everything from the players that they have played for months, and they love it.

What do you think about Star Citizen and the two videos? Does the space game appeal to you?
