LOS ANGELES. Former top hockey player Tuomo Ruutu received a prestigious wash last summer when he was elected assistant coach of the Florida Panthers. Prior to that, the Vantaa employee worked as a development coach for the New York Rangers.
Ruutu praises Panthers’ work atmosphere as positive coach for his NHL career in Chicago, Carolina and New Jersey Andrew Brunetten under the authority of the They work as colleagues on the screen Derek MacKenzie and Ulf Samuelssonwho won two consecutive Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh in 1991-92.
– I’ve gotten really involved in the team and coaching. This is a great outfit. We get along well. I also dare say what I think of things. It is easier when the team has played well, Ruutu tells Urheilu.
The Florida season began with the head coach Joel Quenneville piloted, but he resigned at the end of October. The resignation was prompted by a harassment scandal unveiled at the Chicago Blackhawks, which was being trained in Quenneville between 2008 and 2018. Quenneville was silent about the incident, though he was aware of it.
Quenneville, who won three Stanley Cups in Chicago, was replaced by a much more inexperienced Brunette. He served as Assistant Coach for the Panthers last season and before that in various coaching positions at the Minnesota Wild organization.
Florida’s strong season shows Brunette is up to the task: the team is fighting to win the regular season.
Ruutu, who played as an attacker, scored 735 matches in his NHL career (2003–2016). There are eight World Championship medals and two Olympic bronzes in his prize cabinet. The credit player of the national team was the assistant coach of the Young Lions World Cup team in 2018–21.
In addition to player development, the screen is the responsibility of the team in Florida. The Finn says that his coaching style is player-oriented and follows Brunette.
– It leaves through your own personality. I try to be myself. I think what is best for the player. Sometimes it’s honesty, and I say what can be done better. But of course I try to find more positive things.
– And even if you think about the player’s best, the thoughts are about winning and what is best for the team in the final games.
A steady and deep team
The Florida season has continued with determination towards the first Stanley Cup championship. The only small dip occurred during the Olympic break. The screen assures that the Panthers team spirit is now strong.
– Overall, the team has been fairly flat and at the same time has a lot of width. Through it come a lot of profits.
Captain Alexander Barkov leads troops, but efficiency can also be found in other chains. Especially Jonathan Huberdeau is hard to hold for opponents on the edge of the second chain.
The strikers also play on the team Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen as well as a defender Markus Nutivaara. The latest Finnish acquisition is a defender and a recent Olympic winner Petteri Lindbohmwhich quickly signed a one – year deal with the Panthers after the Jokers withdrew from KHL after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Ruutu is aware of the importance of Finnish players for the team, but the season is not over yet.
– I don’t want to give grades when the season isn’t over yet. Let’s then look at what they are after the season. But of course Sasha has been the captain and lead player on the team. It is clear that he carries the team a lot on his shoulders.
– Lundell has come along nicely during his coming season. So far it has been quite awesome. The game has grown tremendously since the beginning of the season and is growing all the time, which is not surprising, Ruutu analyzes.
