John Wick: Chapter 4 is now in German cinemas. If you can’t get enough of neon action with stylishly choreographed fights, you can get the next dose right away on Netflix. The action film Furies, which has received quite positive reviews, is streaming there.
In Furies, a deadly trio set out to overthrow a gangster boss
“Charlie’s Angels Meets The Raid”, it says in a review of the film and that can be explained by the story like this: A trio of young women are taught by mentor Jacqueline (Veronica Ngo) in the craft of violence in order to survive on the tough streets of the Vietnamese metropolis Ho Chi Minh city to survive. Jacqueline’s goal: She wants to bring down gang boss Hai (Thuan Nguyen), who makes his money from drugs and forced prostitution.
It is nominally the prequel to the action film Furie, which is also streaming on Netflix. Its star Veronica Ngo (Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi) even directs. But Ngo plays a different role this time and otherwise you don’t need any prior knowledge from the other film for Furies.
Is the action film worth it on Netflix?
The film, which screened at the South By Southwest festival, has received positive initial reviews. Variety praises the varied characterization of the trio in which “Hard and often brutal action thriller that echoes the tone and texture of old-fashioned Hong Kong Heroic Bloodshed movies and reminiscent of the ‘Indestructible Fighter’ movies starring Thai action star JeeJa Yanin (Chocolate).”

“Hyper-Brutality Rules Every Action Scene” says the equally positive criticism of Inverse, where the mixture of fist fights and Gun-Fu, which is reminiscent of John Wick, i.e. close fights with firearms, are praised in particular.
“You know a fight scene gets good when an attacker pulls a bloody syringe out of her throat,” summarizes the criticism at RogerEbert.com, and “the struggles of Ngo and [Fight-Choreograf Kefi] Abrikh have the necessary rhythm and palpable impact, even if the characters aren’t as interesting as their brawls.”
Furies has been streaming in the Netflix catalog since March 23.
