Hurricane Oscar made landfall in Cuba News in brief

In the country, the category 1 hurricane has weakened to a storm.

Hurricane Oscar has weakened to a tropical storm as it moves over eastern Cuba. Thunder, rain and localized flooding have been reported from the storm area.

According to local media, when the storm made landfall, it raised two-meter waves on the coast. The buildings have suffered minor damages such as roofs coming off and walls collapsing.

Cuban authorities have opened 20 evacuation centers for those who want shelter from the storm.

At the same time as the storm, Cuba was hit by the collapse of the national power grid, which left millions of people without electricity last week. Part of the electricity distribution had been restored on Saturday.
