– We do not see the need to stress through legislation.

This is how the Swedish Hunters’ Association Secretary General Carl-Johan Djurstedt Holm says about the amendments to the weapons legislation that the government and the Swedish Democrats want to do.

The government and the Swedish Democrats want to ban hunters from having semi-automatic weapons of a military type, such as AR-15, announced Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M) during Friday.

-We understand that you want to act after the horrific madness that happened in Örebro, and that they want to make society safer, says Carl-Johan Djurstedt Holm, secretary general of the Swedish Hunters’ Association.

He continues:

– But legislation is rarely good if it is rushed through. We are happy to participate in a job to develop and make society safer. But we believe that it requires some thought and analysis before moving on and making quick decisions.

Carl-Johan Djursstedt Holm emphasizes several times that “unsuitable people should not have legal weapons”.

– It’s a basic. Then, in fact, legal weapons are used very rarely in crime. So the measures should mainly be directed at preventing school shootings and other madness, and making society safer.

The government also commissioned the police and the National Board of Health and Welfare to strengthen the work of examining whether a person is suitable to have a weapons license. Something that Carl-Johan Djurstedt Holm is cautiously positive.

Last spring, the police estimated that about 3,500 hunters were granted permission to hold AR type firearms.

-And we still do not know if it was such a weapon that was involved in the deed in Örebro, says Carl-Johan Djurstedt Holm.
