Negotiations are currently underway in Brussels on the EU budget until 2027.
Sweden wants to strengthen support for Ukraine – Hungary wants to scrap it completely.
– We are taking steps in the right direction, but we are not there yet, says EU Minister Jessika Roswall (M).
The last EU summit of the year is approaching. A meeting where the contradictions are expected to reach storm force.
It is now that Ukraine is waiting for two unanimous decisions from the EU leaders. Partly about 50 billion euros in support money – partly to be able to start negotiating membership in the Union.
– Sweden wants to secure long-term financial support for Ukraine, the country is in a very difficult situation, says EU Minister Jessika Roswall, who is negotiating ahead of Ulf Kristersson’s (M) arrival on Thursday.
The Swedish negotiator: “Not at the finish line yet”
When all 27 leaders are in place, it is good if most things are ready, but that may not be the case now, according to Roswall.
– All EU member states must make economic priorities. The negotiations are progressing from a Swedish perspective, but we are not at the finish line yet.
Hungary threatens to veto
Ahead of the summit, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has sent a letter to European Council President Charles Michel. According to the international news agency AP, which has seen the letter, Orban writes that both the question of financial support for Ukraine and the question of whether the country should be allowed to start membership negotiations should be removed from the summit’s agenda.
Orban believes in the letter that the EU’s unity will otherwise be lost.
According to the Swedish perspective, which is shared by a large majority of the EU countries, it sends the wrong signals to the outside world if the EU cannot unite.
