The Hungarian parliament has approved Sweden’s NATO application.
188 parliamentarians voted yes, and six voted no. According to SVT’s European correspondent Ulrika Bergsten, the no votes come from parties on the right that normally support Russia.
– We are ready to shoulder our share of the responsibility for NATO’s security, writes Ulf Kristersson at X.
NATO Director General Jens Stoltenberg has also commented on the vote.
– Sweden’s membership will make us all stronger and safer, he writes on X.
Signature remains
The next step is for the speaker, in his capacity as acting president, to sign the decision. It can take up to five days. Before the vote on Sweden’s NATO membership, the former Hungarian president resigned, following a widespread pedophile scandal.
Hungary then becomes the last NATO country to ratify Sweden’s application.
