Hungary to hold rotating EU presidency

NGO Transparency International targeted by administrative investigation

The Hungarian Prime Minister took over this morning (1 July 2024) as head of the Council of the European Union. This is an essentially symbolic function attributed in turn to each Member State, but which offers a great platform to Viktor Orban. Buoyed by the success of the National Rally in France and the progress of the radical right in the European elections, he hopes at the same time to create a new coalition in Parliament to impose a sovereignist vision of Europe.

Viktor Orban has promised to act impartially at the head of the EU Council, but his arrival at the presidency has caused concern in Brussels, where he has distinguished himself more by his ability to block than by his sense of compromise.
