Hungary can ratify Swedens NATO membership as soon as tomorrow

The Turkish president announced yesterday that he would take Sweden’s application to the parliament for ratification.

The acceptance of Sweden’s NATO membership will be discussed again in Hungary as well.

Hungary has previously announced that it will not be the last country to accept Sweden’s membership. In July, the Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced that ratification is a purely technical matter for Hungary.

President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced yesterday that he would take Sweden’s ratification to the parliament for ratification. A more detailed schedule is not known.

According to ‘s information, the processing of Sweden’s membership in Hungary has otherwise been completed, only the last vote is missing. If the Fidesz party, which controls the country and has a majority in the parliament, decides, Sweden’s membership can be voted on as early as tomorrow. Parliament will schedule tomorrow’s votes this afternoon.

The opposition in the parliament demands that the committee that decides on the agenda should discuss the issue in its extraordinary meeting. However, the opposition parties only have a quarter of the seats in the parliament, which means that their actions alone do not lead to decisions.

The acceptance of Finland’s NATO membership also took a long time in Hungary. However, after Turkey announced that it would take up the issue, Hungary quickly ratified Finland’s membership.

Hungary has harshly criticized Sweden. Sweden has stuck to the EU’s rule of law policy and criticized the Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán actions of the government that weaken democracy, like Finland.

The matter was corrected on 24.10. at 12:50 p.m. Péter Szijjártó is the foreign minister of Hungary, not Turkey.
