More and more tourists are coming to Norrbotten and many of them want to go dog sledding. Increased demand also means more companies.
Today, 150 dog sled companies are registered in the county, but the county administrative board suspects that there are significantly more.
Although the vast majority of companies behave themselves, there have been several serious misconducts.
In the past five years, the county administrative board has taken care of 304 draft dogs, something that has cost the taxpayers over two and a half million kroner.
More checks on the industry
Now the industry will be scrutinized harder and extra checks on companies will be made.
– We have many companies that welcome an inspection and want to show off their business. Then there are companies that are not as welcoming, says Anna Modig, head of unit at the county board’s animal welfare and veterinary unit.
