Hundreds head to the Brigden Fair

BRIGDEN – There are dozens of reasons to come to the Brigden Fair each year, but for the Hunts it’s one thing in particular: the candy apples.

“This is our tradition,” said Melanie Hunt, who enjoyed one of the bright red treats with her son, Malcolm, 3.

The Hunts and hundreds of other people packed the fairgrounds Saturday – Brigden Road and Courtright Line leading to the area were backed up for kilometers with cars waiting to get in – which ended up being the day with the best weather of the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Due to significant rainfall Sunday, Monday’s light horse and open speed show was canceled, officials announced.

But all other events were still on, including the lumberjack show and midway rides.

“Put on your jacket and rubber boots and come over to the Brigden Fair. Everything else is a go,” organizers said on the event’s Facebook page Monday morning.

A heavy horse show and baby show were also on Monday’s agenda, with the four-day event wrapping up about 4 pm

Dozens of other events went ahead as expected Saturday – highlighted by a parade around noon – and Sunday. The event started Friday with Lambton-Kent Ag in the Classroom’s annual Agriculture Awareness Day, aimed at teaching people where their food comes from.

The first Brigden Fair was held in 1850 at Riley’s Tavern and featured only cattle and horses, according to the fair’s website. For the next four decades, the site alternated between Mooretown and Corunna, and later between Courtright and Brigden, until settling into the current grounds in 1889, it says.
