According to local media, several hundred people have been arrested in Brazil after government buildings were stormed by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro on Sunday.
According to Ibaneis Rocha, the governor of the federal district of Brasília, around 400 people have been detained. Early on Monday, it was announced that Rocha was forced to leave his post as he failed to prevent Sunday’s events, writes the newspaper O Globo.
Bolsonaro himself writes on Twitter: “Peaceful demonstrations, which follow the law, are part of democracy. However, looting and storming of public buildings today, like those of the left in 2013 and 2017, are beyond the law”.
He further writes that he himself has always defended the country’s laws, constitution and democracy and that those who stormed the government buildings have nothing to do with him.
