Humanitarian crisis grossly underfunded warns UN

In the DRC, the humanitarian crisis in the country remains underfunded three months before the end of the year, warns the United Nations. Needs have exploded while resources remain meager. However, the country has nearly 6.4 million internally displaced people, two thirds of whom are in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, in the east of the country. To address this situation, the DRC requires 2.6 billion dollars (around 2.4 billion euros), but only 37% of this sum has been released by donors.

In DRCit is a crisis that remains very largely underfunded. “This is how Bruno Lemarquis, humanitarian coordinator in the DRC, is sounding the alarm and calling on the Congolese government to allocate part of its budget to aid humanitarian. Some conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Gaza warseem, for him, to attract more resources. If we compare this situation to other crises in the world, we see that some of them are much better financed, often because of their geopolitical importance or the media attention they generate,” he suggests.

Multiplication of crises

The other reason is the pressure that exists on resources at the international level, due to the multiplication of crises. We are also constantly discussing with the Congolese government, because it is very important that there is also a mobilization of Congolese resources to respond to the Congolese humanitarian crisis. »

Another consequence of the conflict is that many people have been forced to flee urgently, leaving everything behind. They no longer have any means of subsistence. “In this situation, some people are forced to resort to ” negative survival strategies “, including ” there prostitution and traffic “, the coordinator emphasizes. This reality contributes in large part to the alarming increase in places of prostitution in the displaced persons camps.
