The days of sharing Hulu account with friends and family are numbered. Like Netflix and sister service Disney+ before it, Hulu restricts password sharing outside of the account holder’s “primary personal residence” under an updated subscriber agreement. This is true unless the application is “permitted by your service layer”; This means users can pay extra to share their membership outside of their home.
Hulu restricts password sharing
According to The Verge, Hulu started telling users that they must comply with the new rules by March 14. The service is notifying subscribers in emails that it’s adding limits on sharing your account outside of your home, but it’s unclear exactly how Hulu plans to keep track of this.
Netflix became the first major streaming service to restrict password sharing and saw an increase in subscriber numbers as a result. Disney+ followed suit late last year, and considering Disney will soon own Hulu entirely, it’s little surprise that Hulu is heading in the same direction.
