Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist (S) says that he is open to proceeding with a special contingency tax to finance the expansion of the defense.
– We are prepared to make a special contingency tax, he says.
– What I think is important to say in this context is that you can’t just live on expenses, you also have to have income.
How such a tax could be designed is not clear, but the Minister of Defense says that in that case it should have a distribution policy effect. He also refers to the fact that the Social Democrats will present an election manifesto before the election this autumn.
– Those who have the most well-ordered conditions must join and contribute. It is a matter of justice.
All parties have supported expanding the defense with the equivalent of two percent of GDP, but there are different opinions about how quickly it should go. The opposition believes that it is possible by 2025, while the government and the Armed Forces have made the assessment that it can happen by 2028 at the latest.
