Denmark beat Northern Ireland 1–0 in the Finnish group in the European football qualifiers. Denmark moved back to the top spot in the group ahead of Finland. Northern Ireland bullied the top team in the group in the first half, but at the beginning of the second half Jonas Wind scored a relief goal.

There was still great drama in the match, when Northern Ireland Callum Marshall tied the match in the fourth minute of overtime. However, after a video review lasting several minutes, the goal was rejected as offside.

Denmark survived with a scare and was able to climb back to the top of the group. Earlier in March, Denmark unexpectedly lost away to Kazakhstan.

In the second match of the group, Finland’s next opponent San Marino lost to Kazakhstan 0–3. The recent results mean that Finland fell to third place in its group. With Denmark’s draw, Finland had remained at the top of the group.

There are now no less than four teams in the group with equal points: Denmark, Kazakhstan, Finland and Slovenia.

The two best teams in the group will advance directly to next summer’s European Championships.

Finland will next face San Marino on Monday at the Olympic Stadium.

On Friday, Finland beat Slovenia 2–0 in an important home match for European Championship places. Slovenia has been considered Finland’s main opponent in the hunt for a place in the European Championship.

However, the cheerleaders also had a hard time in the game. Assisted both of Finland’s goals Teemu Pukki had to leave the game due to cramp. Also Nikolai Alho appeared to be holding his leg before being carried off the field.

Finland’s head coach Markku Kanervan according to the situation of the players who suffered from cramps for the San Marino match is open.

– We have to look at the situation of the players who got cramps and how bad the injuries are, Kanerva reflected at the press conference after the match.

– The team’s work ethic was amazing again today. The guys put everything into the game.

Pukki has scored all the goals of the current EC qualifiers for Finland.

Kanerva is aware that everything but a win on Monday will be a disappointment for Finland.

– We cannot afford to underestimate San Marino. A tight and low defense awaits us. We have to cause them problems. If we spin the ball only outside the shape, nothing may be produced. However, I believe that this victory against Slovenia gave us drive, Kanerva described the setup for the match.
