Currently, the 3rd season of Only Murders in the Building with the streaming service Disney + * again for fun and crime thriller when three neighbors (Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, Martin Short) go on a crime hunt with their podcast. Incidentally, superstars also dish out against Grey’s Anatomy and a successful casting finally brings the joke over the finish line for Grey’s fans.
Disney+ Neighbors: Only Murders in the Building brings up Grey’s Anatomy in Season 3
On August 8, 2023, the third season of Only Murders in the Building began on Disney+ and investigates the case of a double murdered Marvel star with weekly episodes. Podcaster and theater director Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) was well on his way to making his Broadway comeback with said dead star. Now the theater dream threatens despite it Discovery of previously unknown actress Loretta Durkin (Meryl Streep!) to burst if he cannot make another success out of the tragedy.

Now, Season 3 Episode 3 Only Murders in the Building (Title: Get Your Tissues Out) is coming to Disney+ on August 15, 2023. In it, Meryl’s Streep’s character, Loretta, lands an audition for a TV series that jeopardizes her involvement in the play. However, she raves (at minute 13) about the chances of this commitment: “It’s a spin-off of a spin-off of a Grey’s Anatomy spin-off.” Her role would be the potentially limping mother of a dermatologist, so even with backstory and lyrics, to her delight.
Loretta’s new manager Dickie (Jeremy Shamos) even names the series later (in minute 26): “Grey’s Burn Center for Families” – Originally “Grey’s New Orleans: Family Burn Unit”. With a wink, the crime series makes fun of the franchise trend of series universes, which produce more and more offshoots if they are successful on TV. Just think of Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Chicago Med and Chicago Justice.

Disney+ hit series
Why Only Murders in the Building chose Grey’s Anatomy for the joke of a three-time TV spin-off is obvious. Hardly any series is in ratings and running time as successful and well known as record holder Grey’s Anatomy with its now 19 seasons and the spin-offs Private Practice and Seattle Firefighters. The fact that film goddess Meryl Streep is allowed to dish out this dig as a guest star is all the more efficient. But that’s not all.
Only Grey’s Anatomy fans can laugh twice: a star makes the swipe even funnier
What makes the Grey’s Anatomy mention in the Disney+ series even more amusing is that a Ex-Grey’s Anatomy star cast in Only Murders in the Building Season 3: Jesse Williams For 12 years before leaving Grey’s Anatomy, he played Dr. Jackson Avery. Now, two years later, he is part of the crime comedy as documentary filmmaker Tobert and apparently takes the reference to his old TV home with humor.

Ex-Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams in Only Murders in the Building S3
Only Murders series creator John Hoffman revealed the so-called tableread, in which a script is read together with all the actors for the first time:
Jesse [Williams] was very sweet with it. He roared with laughter, when the reference came. It’s a real tribute. I mean, has there ever been a more successful show than Grey’s Anatomy? What luck for one [unbekannte] Actress like Loretta to have this opportunity!
In the US, Only Murders is streamed by Hulu and Grey’s Anatomy by ABC, both of which are owned by Disney. In Germany, one Disney+ series jokes directly about another. Shonda Rhimes will certainly not blame anyone for this series comment on her success.
And who knows: If Grey’s Anatomy might even refer back to Only Murders in the Building in the future, we might even get a series paradox like Gilmore Girls and The Sopranos again.
