Huge sci fi series on Netflix is about to end even

Imagine your favorite series getting a final season after 3 years of running to conclude the story. Stars are returning, there are first reports of new castings and a start to filming. Production begins and the final episodes are being completed. Suddenly the studio sells the series and the finished season to another production company. And then nothing happens for 10 months.

This is the current situation of Snowpiercer. The sci-fi series seems to be stuck in eternal ice. Stars like Jennifer Connelly and Sean Bean starred in the new edition of the dystopian graphic novel. It was shown in Germany on Netflix and three seasons were released. A loyal fan base here is also eagerly waiting for season 4, because the season 3 finale was a year and a half ago.

But the doubts that the… Completed filming of the 4th season of Snowpiercer ever appears, grow. What happened?

Snowpiercer Season 4 was not released – for cost-cutting reasons

TNT/Netflix

Snowpiercer

The worldwide broadcast of Snowpiercer has always been a bit confusing: In the USA, the episodes ran on TNT, a sub-network of Warner Bros. Discovery. ITV distributed the series internationally – including in Germany. Netflix released it.

In January 2023 it will be announced: Warner Bros. Discovery is pulling out of Snowpiercer and is selling the entire series. The final season will not be shown on TNT. Season 4 was almost finished at the time, but no longer had a home station. Seasons 1 to 3 are also disappearing from their streaming platform in the USA.

Why doesn’t Warner just broadcast a finished season? The reason is so-called tax write-offs. Simply explained: It is cheaper for companies not to show finished series and films at all than to upload them to their streaming platforms. That’s why films like Batgirl remain in the poison cupboard. Warner isn’t the only company doing this. The measures are popular because they save costs quickly and easily. Of course, fans, crew and actors can’t buy anything from it.

Back to Snowiercer, because there is hope: The company Tomorrow Studios is taking over the series. She is even planning a sequel and a prequel within the franchise. First, Tomorrow Studios wants to find a buyer for Season 4 and the old seasons. But that is not so easy.

Will Snowpiercer Season 4 Ever Release?

We jump from January to September 2023: Tomorrow Studios is still looking for a streaming service, said producer Marty Adelstein in an interview with Deadline: We have season 4 in the can. We are talking to a number of interested parties about purchasing the first three seasons and also season 4.”

TNT/Netflix

Snowpiercer

Nothing happened between January and September 2023. This raises questions, including for Netflix. As a reminder: Snowpiercer was never shown on TNT worldwide anyway.

  • Why doesn’t the streaming service that shows the series worldwide also broadcast it in the USA?
  • Did the sale of Snowpiercer mean that all acceptance deals and rights orders were no longer valid?
  • And was Netflix perhaps happy about it because Snowpiercer no longer attracts enough subscribers? (The most important criterion for Netflix success is how many new subscriptions a published title generates.)
  • Is the takeover blocked by any contractual detail?
  • Or is nobody interested in Snowpiercer?
  • Meanwhile, Snowpiercer’s official X account is auctioning off a few original props to fans – but they’re just screaming about Season 4 in the comments.

Based on current knowledge, it seems certain: As long as Tomorrow Studios doesn’t find a new buyer, the 4th season of Snowpiercer will not be shown in Germany either. But we are now at the end of October. Another month and a half has passed since the last update. How long will Tomorrow Studios try to sell a series that no streaming service apparently wants?

    Also interesting:

It’s perhaps a bit naive: But what kind of strange time is this when owning series with millions of fans is not a profit but a burden for streaming services and broadcasters?

By the way, you don’t have to check: In Germany, Snowpiercer seasons 1 to 3 are still streaming on Netflix, don’t worry.
