A Russian warship has stopped in the Kattegat Strait between Denmark and Sweden.
The Russian Merkuri missile corvette has stopped in the Kattegat Strait between Denmark and Sweden, reports Helsingin Sanomat.
The warship that arrived on Thursday seems to have come to observe the situation of the Chinese cargo ship Yi Peng 3, suspected of cable violations in the Baltic Sea, and to demonstrate Russia’s power, according to experts interviewed by the newspaper.
The position of the Merkuri missile corvette is not visible from open maritime traffic services, because the ship’s AIS locator is not turned on. Helsingin Sanomat has confirmed the location of the warship with the help of an expert source who uses signals intelligence.
The Yi Peng 3, linked to the cable breakers, has been anchored in the Kattegat Strait since it was apparently stopped by Danish authorities on Tuesday.
– It is possible that it (the Russian warship) has been ordered to stay and observe the situation. Or simply to show strength, which would be typical for Russia, a Polish military expert told Helsingin Sanomat Milosz Gapinski.
