HP Omen 17 review

In our HP Omen review (ck0010nt), we take a look at the general features of the model, which stands out with its screen features and powerful hardware.

As you know, HP, which produces computers in different segments, focuses on the gamer side with the OMEN series. The company, which has made quite different designs and configurations on both desktop and laptop sides, has also expanded its product range in the upper segment. Here, we take a closer look at one of the company’s latest models in our HP OMEN 17 review (ck0010nt), which stands out with its features and hardware.

Design

First of all, let’s talk about the design, as always. HP has used very simple lines in this model. If you like simple designs like me, you will love the design of this model. The HP OMEN logo is placed on the cover and this logo, which has a shimmering design, has managed to add a beautiful color.

We see that there are ventilation grilles on the right and rear. Again, on the right, there are two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, while on the left, when we look at the ports, the majority are given to the left, although they are spread on both sides. On the left side, along with the power input, there is an ethernet port, USB 3.4 Gen 1, Mini Display Port 1.4, HDMI 2.1, Type C input that also acts as Thunderbolt, and a 3.5 mm jack input. There is also an SD card reader on this side. Some brands have given up on this, but considering that many people transfer data with cameras or video cameras, we can say that they have a good advantage in this regard.

The HP OMEN 17 model weighs 1.82 kg. Another point we should mention in the design is that the laptop has a large adapter apart from this weight. This adapter, which is almost as big as a Mac Mini, naturally makes it a bit more difficult to carry. But on the other hand, it has been able to turn this weight into a kind of advantage because it is 330W.

In the design, which has a plastic alloy, you can open the lid with one hand. It is quite good in terms of material quality, but it also gives the impression that if you hold it wrong, especially the cover part will bend. The webcam is placed in the middle of the cover. This widescreen camera has 720P resolution.

On the audio side, a collaboration was made with Bang & Olufsen. You can already see the logo just to the left of the keyboard part. A really good job with the sound, with dual speakers with DTS:X support. Of course, it is not suitable for sound reduction in games, but you encounter a more than enough quality in daily use. A chewing gum keyboard design is used and typing is extremely enjoyable. There is no NumePad part, so the keycaps are large and spaced out. We can say that this is a design that the players will love as well as making the writing event easier. Let’s also mention that the keyboard has four-zone RGB lighting.

There are six macro keys on the left side of the keyboard. This situation provides a good use in terms of assigning keys in games, but the vertical arrangement can sometimes cause the ctrl key and the P6 key to be confused. You have to use it a bit and get used to it. You can adjust RGB lighting and other keyboard adjustments from the OMEN Gaming Hub app.

Display Features

When you open the lid of the laptop, of course, the first thing you notice is the phrase 165 Hz. I can say that this screen makes its difference both in daily use and in games. Especially in Valorant, CS: Go style competitive games or story-based productions that have a fast structure, you find exactly what you expect.

One of the best aspects of this screen, which has a brightness of 300 Nit, is that it is 2K. Naturally, you can see the games in much more detail on the screen, which has a resolution of 2560 x 1440. It is now a great advantage to see high resolutions on the laptop side, especially on gaming computers, after desktop computers.

Hardware and Gaming Side

The HP Omen 17 model has 16 GB Ram and 1 TB M.2 SSD storage. While the i9 11900H model is preferred on the processor side, we see the RTX 3080 model, one of the most powerful solutions today, on the graphics card side. It already manages to get a high score of 5609 in the Cinebench test and 32850 in the 3DMark side. In other words, when we look at the features, it is possible to say that it is one of the most powerful systems that can be in a laptop.

When we come to the game tests, it is possible to say that you can play all the games released today without any problems with this graphics card. Of course, you can reach the 144 Hz screen advantage in competitive games or productions that require a lower system. In AAA games, it is possible to get different and higher results with the advantage of DLSS. For example, if you turn on 2K in Dying Light 2, the game normally watches around 45 FPS, and when you turn on the DLSS performance mode, it manages to go over 90 FPS.

You can go over 120 FPS at medium settings in metro Exodus, which is one of the games that attract attention with its RTX features in recent years. When you pull all the settings to the Extreme level and turn on RTX, it is possible to get a performance of around 50 FPS. While you get almost close performance in Red Dead Redemption 2, you can easily go over 100 FPS in productions such as Apex Legends or PUBG.

The HP Omen 17 is a model that focuses on temperature distribution. As I mentioned at the beginning, the ventilation outlets on the laptop are quite adequate and manage to keep the device cool. However, this comes with an advantage as well as a disadvantage. Because when you play a game or process a video, the laptop works very loudly. When you wear headphones, it is not a problem, but if you do not, you will encounter a sound as if a fan is running under you.

Battery Performance and Result

When we consider the battery performance features and the fact that it is a gaming computer, it lags a bit in the background. When the device is at 100% level, it provides an average of 2 hours of use. Of course, when you play the game, you see that this time is reduced a little more.

In fact, this time decreases according to the diameter of the game you are playing. When you play League of Legends-style games, while you can easily use two games, that is, about 1.5 hours, this time unfortunately drops to less than an hour in AAA games. It is possible to say that it is a model that needs an outlet except for emergencies.

The HP Omen 17 is a laptop where you can easily see your work if you are dealing with both games and video works such as Premiere. Gaming performance is good, screen, keyboard usage and sound performance are very successful in daily use. Of course, it is necessary to consider some aspects such as noisy work under stress. As a result, the HP Omen 17 is a model designed for gamers looking for high-end performance with its screen quality, high resolution, and more importantly, the hardware it contains.
