In Sweden, there were 2.3 million people who received a general pension in January 2024, according to The Pensions Authority. In addition to the general pension, there are also many people who receive occupational pensions.

At the same time shows a new survey from SPP that many young Swedes, aged 18-34, have not actively done anything to improve their future pension. This while they also have positive expectations for life as a pensioner, as 74 percent state that they will spend time with family and 50 percent state that they plan to travel.

Many young people are passive in their pension savings

More specifically, the survey shows that 53 percent of young people are passive in their pension response and that a full 60 percent find it difficult to understand the current pension rules.

29 percent do not know who provides their occupational pension and 41 percent also do not know how much is paid into their pension.

In addition, SPP believes that there are “disturbing differences” when it comes to pension savings among young women and young men. Namely, 57 percent of women state that they have not taken any active steps to improve their pension. The corresponding figure for men is 49 percent.

Shoka Åhrman: “Maximum with smaller sums”

Shoka Åhrmanwho is a savings economist at SPP, urges young people to start saving a little each month in time for retirement.

– Rather max out with slightly smaller sums. That said, you have time on your side. And it’s never too late either if you figure it out when you’re a little, a little older, she says News24.

Åhrman lists four pieces of advice for those who want to start saving and save that pension dream that many young people still seem to have:

  • Don’t have pension anxiety: Get hold of your savings and your finances.
  • Get an overview. Get help from an adviser at a bank or pension company.
  • Start monthly savings.
  • Remember: Time is on your side.
