“If the battery is half-bad, it takes the most beating”

News24 have spoken to Mekonomen’s car expert Magnus Blommé who gives his best tips on how to think to get the car to cope with the freezing cold of winter. He explains that by taking care of the service regularly, you create good conditions for the car to survive the winter. But he also points out which parts of the car may be particularly vulnerable, and which you need to keep an extra eye on.

– If the battery is half-bad, it takes the most beating. If it gets extremely cold, it shows which battery is weak and cannot cope with low temperatures. Therefore, you should maintenance charge the battery and test it regularly, he explains.

Blommé believes that it is important to maintain the battery because it can die even if you drive shorter distances.

– Many people are surprised that batteries die even if you don’t drive such long distances. In fact, the battery does not have time to recover if you drive shorter distances. You extract more electricity from the battery than if you drive longer distances where it has time to recharge. If it’s cold and you run the fan on full heat, seat heater and defroster on, then you have drained the battery very much and then you need to drive 1-2 hours to recharge it. That is why it is extremely important to perform a maintenance charge and sometimes drive longer distances.

The car expert: How to make your car survive the winter

In order to cope with freezing temperatures and temperatures well below zero degrees, in addition to a charged battery, you also need to take concrete measures to ensure that your car survives the winter, regardless of whether it is an electric car or a fossil-powered car.

Do you drive an electric car?

Always have a starter booster with you that is charged. It is cheap life insurance for the car in the winter.

– When it comes to electric cars, it needs to be fully charged as the electricity is consumed much faster when you need to keep the passenger compartment warm. As a rule, electric cars do not last as long as a fossil-fueled car, especially not if there is a traffic jam and you are standing for a long time.

Do you drive a fossil fueled car?

Don’t take chances driving around with too little fuel, have a full tank as often as you can and don’t ride on the margins. Also make sure you have things with you to make it through a long stop on the road if traffic is at a standstill.
