Xavier Yvon: Like many parents with young children, I have subscribed to several Instagram, Facebook and TikTok accounts, which offer ideas for activities, family outings… or even tips to make our daily lives easier. If you are also a subscriber, you know that social networks regularly suggest accounts that offer educational advice. A bit like this:

TikTok video clip : “Here is the reason why I tell the parents to stop with the punishments. The punishment is double punishment for the children and for the parents.”

Xavier Yvon : We often see other parents, who talk about their personal experiences. But also psychologists, people who present themselves as scientists and mysterious “parental coaches” who share their expertise.

TikTok video clip : “The only effective remedy for a child’s anger is oxytocin. Oxytocin is the hormone that you will allow him to secrete when you take him in your arms.”

Xavier Yvon : By dint of hearing all this, I know that we can sometimes feel guilty. When we raised our voices, for example, or when we decided to punish a child after a mistake. We feel a little lost, and it’s even worse if we look at the comments: we are witnessing arm wrestling between the supporters of a so-called “positive” or “benevolent” education and their detractors.

In recent weeks, this passionate debate has also spread in the media. Many self-proclaimed experts rail against each other and violently denounce the practices of their opponents. So, with the La Loupe team, we thought that it deserved an episode to learn to recognize the merits – and of course, the excesses – of positive education.
