How to dress baby in summer

In summer, the heat can be bothersome for babies who sweat a lot. What clothes to choose during the day and at night so that he can withstand high temperatures well? Answers and advice from Paule Salomon, Bien-Naître ambassador.

In summer, temperatures regularly exceed 30 degrees! A heat that baby does not always support well. “The thermoregulatory and sweating system of infants and young children is still immature and is not yet regulated perfectly”, explains Paule Salomon, physiotherapist and Bien-Naître ambassador. Vigilance is therefore required, especially as babies are five times more sensitive to heat than adults. This is the reason why it is necessary to adapt their environment and their clothing during the summer season.

It all depends on age and the outside temperature.

Baby is less than 10 days old

A newborn is not yet able to regulate its body temperature. You can therefore put on a bodysuit with long sleeves and cotton pants, overalls or a jumpsuit with press studs at the crotch.

If your baby is over 10 days old

Baby becomes less fragile and you can make your choice according to the temperatures:

  • if they don’t exceed 21 degrees, you can dress your baby in a short-sleeved bodysuit, a long-sleeved t-shirt and pants.
  • If the temperatures are between 22 and 25 degrees, opt for a short-sleeved bodysuit, a short-sleeved T-shirt and a skirt or shorts.
  • If the temperatures exceed 27 degrees, you can dress it in a sleeveless bodysuit and a short-sleeved t-shirt.

Equip your child with loose clothing such as a T-shirt, advises Paule Salomon. Privilege natural materials like cotton which can absorb up to 8.5% of its weight in water and is therefore perfect for limiting perspiration. Linen is also recommended in summer, as it gives a feeling of freshness.

On the color side, opt for shades like beige, white, ecru or pastel which attract less sunlight than darker colors. “If it is really hot, baby can wear a small T-shirt and a slightly damp hat to avoid sunstroke.“, advises Paule Salomon.

Baby has trouble sleeping when temperatures stay high at night. Again, this is to take heat into account.

  • If it is 24-25 degrees, a short-sleeved bodysuit and a light sleeping bag will suit the situation.
  • From 26 degrees, the short-sleeved bodysuit alone will be sufficient.
  • Finally, beyond 27 degrees, you can make your child sleep only in diaper”says Paule Salomon.

So now is the time to put sleeping bags, overpajamas and warm pajamas away in the closet, advises Paule Salomon, who adds that it is necessary prefer 100% cotton fitted sheets so that baby can spend peaceful nights!
