Cortana is the name of the personal assistant developed by Microsoftreleased in 2014 for Windows Phone initially and which is now also integrated into the operating system Windows 10 on PC. Like all personal assistants intelligent, it can turn out to be very practical and provide many services, the counterpart being the collection of data carried out by Microsoft when you use it. If you find Cortana unnecessary or if you are worried about the security of your personal data, it is possible to deactivate it on Windows 10. Today, Futura reveals the procedure to follow if you have the Family version of Windows 10.
First, click the magnifying glass-shaped “Search” button on your taskbar, then type “Run” into the empty field. You then see theapplication “Execute” as the best result. Click on it. You can also use the keyboard shortcut “Windows + R” to achieve the same result.
The window “Execute” appears on the screen, type “regedit” in the empty field, then confirm with a click on “OK”.
The Registry Editor window appears.
Now browse the tree until you find the “ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindows Search” key.
It is possible that the key in question does not exist. If so, it must be created. To do this, right-click in the tree structure on the “Windows” key, select “New” in the contextual menu, then click on “Key”. Name it “Windows Search”.
Right-click on the “Windows Search” key, choose “New” from the context menu, then “32-bit DWORD Value” from the choices available to you.
Name the value you just created “AllowCortana”. By default, its value should be 0.
You can now log out of your session for the change to take effect.
When you reconnect, right-click on a free area of your taskbar. You can see that the “Show Cortana button” option is gone.
If for some reason you want to re-enable Cortana, go back to the registry editor, right click on the “AllowCortana” value and choose “Edit”.
A window for modifying the value appears. Change the value data to “1”, then confirm with “OK”.
Cortana is then active again.
